No Heat? Here’s What To Do

Whether furnace, heat pump, or another form of heater, you don’t want it to go out. Are you experiencing no heat? Here’s what to do to see if you can get your heater going. Please only proceed if you are comfortable with the following tasks.

1. CHECK THE POWER

All heaters use some form of power from electricity to propane to natural gas. A lack of power may be the cause. One of the most common causes of lack of power to the heater is a blown fuse. Fuses can be overloaded and will shut off. Be sure to check the fuse box and give the switch assigned to the HVAC system a flip. Be sure to contact a professional if you believe a gas leak is a reason you have no heat.

2. CHECK YOUR AIR FILTER

If you can’t remember the last time you changed your heater’s air filter, that may be the issue. Air filters take in all the contaminants passing through the unit. After a period of time, they become clogged and can stop the heater from working. Consult your owner’s manual for the location of the filter and examine it. Replace it if it is clogged to see if that addresses the issue.

3. CHECK YOUR THERMOSTAT

Your thermostat may not be properly sending the signal to your heater to engage at a certain temperature. Try turning it up or down to see if the unit powers on. Change the batteries if it uses them. Those of you comfortable with the knowledge to check the wiring can remove the thermostat unit to ensure the wires are connected correctly.

4. OTHER ESSENTIAL ITEMS

Does your unit use a pilot light? Check to ensure it is lit. You should also make sure your registers (air vents) are open and unobstructed. Those of you with access to your ductwork via an attic or other area may check to ensure no gaping holes are allowing the hot air to escape. You may use duct tape to seal up any fissures.

If the above doesn’t work, be sure to check your warranty to see if your repairs will be covered by the manufacturer. You’ll most likely need to know the make, model, and a serial number of your unit. You may click here to get a guide from Lennox on how to do so.
